How to stop calculation mistakes in JEE

Calculation errors are a writing problem far more often than a mathematics problem. The fixes are all changes to how the working goes on the page.

  • One operation per line. Compressing three steps into one line is where signs disappear, and it saves less time than the re-solve costs.
  • Carry units through every line. A units mismatch at the end catches a whole class of errors before you reach the options.
  • Write the negative sign first when a term crosses the equals sign, before writing the term itself.
  • Substitute numbers last. Working symbolically to the final expression means fewer digits to mishandle and makes the error visible if it appears.
  • Sanity-check magnitude before choosing an option. If a velocity comes out at 10⁶ m/s, something upstream is wrong.

How to stop misreading questions in exams

Misreads cluster around a small set of words, which makes them unusually easy to defend against. The qualifiers that flip a question are almost always: not, except, incorrect, least, minimum, maximum, cannot, and never.

  1. Underline or circle the qualifier before you start solving. Three seconds a question, and it forces the word through your attention rather than past it.
